Returning to the ominous New York streets they first explored in "Taxi Driver," director Martin Scorsese and scripter Paul Schrader offer a compelling, emotional look at the life-and-death dealings of an ambulance crew. Nicolas Cage is burned-out veteran paramedic Frank Pierce, haunted by several recent cases he failed to save, who finds solace with ex-junkie Mary Burke (Patricia Arquette), the daughter of a cardiac patient he rescued.
